What this introduction can do

WHMIS is Canada’s system for communicating information about hazardous workplace products. Labels, safety data sheets and education work together; knowing one symbol does not establish that a person can safely use a product.

Your goal here is to locate reliable information and recognize when you need instruction. This module does not provide product-specific procedures, a complete WHMIS program or authorization to handle a substance. Your employer must explain the requirements for your actual job and workplace.

Reflect: List the products you would ask about during orientation, without naming patients or sharing internal records.

Start with the label

A supplier label identifies a product and communicates hazards and precautions. A workplace label may be used in specified circumstances. A missing or unreadable label is a reason to stop and get the approved information, not to identify a substance by smell or appearance.

Scenario: a colleague hands you an unmarked spray bottle and says it is the usual cleaner. You have not been trained on it. Explain that you need the product identified and the relevant workplace instructions before using it. The colleague’s confidence does not resolve the missing information.

Reflect: Write a respectful sentence you could use to pause this task.

Find the safety data sheet

A safety data sheet provides more detailed information about a hazardous product. Ask where current sheets are kept and how to access them during your shift. The product identifier should correspond to the product you are using.

Practice task: with a supervisor and an approved example, locate the product identifier, hazard information and the workplace procedure connected to it. Record that you practised locating the information, rather than copying internal documents into a personal learning tool.

Reflect: What would you do if the sheet and container appear to name different products?

Education and workplace instruction

General education explains hazard communication. Workplace training addresses the particular products, tasks, protective measures and emergency arrangements at that site. A previous course from another employer does not answer every local question.

Ontario, Alberta and Quebec share the Canadian WHMIS framework, but the applicable workplace requirements and instructions must be checked locally. Ask the supervisor which education, demonstrations and assessments you must complete before carrying out the task.

Reflect: Prepare three questions for a workplace orientation conversation.

An uncertainty plan

Before a task, be able to identify the product, find its information and identify the person who can resolve a question. If those steps are incomplete, pause and use the workplace reporting route. Do not mix products, improvise protective equipment or clean an unfamiliar spill based on this module.

Your completion record should say introductory WHMIS awareness. It is not evidence that employer-specific training or a practical assessment has occurred. Keep a separate checklist for the instruction and assessment your employer requires.

Reflect: Write one next step and the workplace person responsible for helping you complete it.
