Know your role

Start with the responsibilities your employer has assigned and the limits relevant to your role. A request from a colleague does not automatically mean you are trained, authorized or able to carry it out.

If you are unsure, explain the uncertainty and ask the responsible supervisor. Avoid presenting yourself as having a qualification or approval you do not hold. This introduction is about asking good questions; it does not establish a clinical scope of practice.

Reflect: How would you explain that you need clarification before taking on a task?

Keep relationships professional

In a care workplace, people may be in vulnerable situations and professional relationships can involve a difference in power. Be thoughtful about gifts, personal favours, social media connections and sharing private contact details.

Follow the employer’s policy and, where relevant, your regulator’s guidance. When a request feels uncomfortable or could create a conflict, seek advice through the proper channel. Do not make an informal exception simply because a person says the request should remain secret.

Reflect: Identify a workplace policy you would want to locate before starting.

Respond without blame

A respectful boundary can be clear and kind: explain what you can do, what you cannot agree to and where the person can get appropriate help. You do not need to disclose your own private circumstances to justify a professional limit.

For a non-clinical example, someone asks to contact you on your personal account about a workplace matter. You can direct them to the approved contact route. If the situation raises a concern, follow local reporting instructions.

Reflect: Practise a sentence that redirects a request to an approved route.
